4th Annual Produced Water Reuse Initiative Conference 2014

Posted : December 09,2014

In a two-day whirlwind, the Water Reuse Initiative Conference of 2014 proved informative and enlightening, making for spicy new discussions in the office. Chairman Philip Winner, CEO of Outrider Energy, welcomed everyone to the anticipated event and provided an overview of the exciting topics to be discussed.

Beginning with a keynote on how to minimize the cost of reusing produced wastewater, AWWT understood the most economic ways of treating water so it can be reused. We listened keenly as the speaker described the techniques used to ensure the produced water reached the levels of water quality required for reuse in completions. This was in regards to how a leading operator minimized the cost of reusing produced water for completion in The Rockies.

As the day continued, topics like treating saltwater, water sharing and water sourcing strategies were discussed. After each speech, speakers held a question and answer session where audience members could delve deeper into topics and provide their own market insights. With an abundance of information, we absorbed everything from outlining unique ways of sourcing water from non-tributary sources untapped by the agricultural industry, to evaluating ways in which operators can take advantage of differences in the lifecycle of their water supply demands. The reception following day one was a great opportunity for our team to connect with those who spoke, and discuss topical issues with other professionals in the industry.

At the outset of day two, Winner welcomed everyone back and then introduced Michael Rynearson, Operations Manager of Caerus Oil & Gas, who began the fresh day with notes on evaluating the economics of creating and operating your own disposal well. Key equipment, emerging techniques and cost-effective strategies were highlighted in this talk. In the late morning, we listened intently to a water storage strategies discussion, making notes on which water storage options offer the lowest cost and optimal capacity for produced water recycling operations. After lunch, Tyler Bittner, Engineering Manager of WPX Energy, provided an overview of WPX’s overall water recycling strategy and produced water cycle.

Wrapping up with an explanation of the technologies and processes that were used to reduce cost, we then moved to the discussion on minimizing environmental impact, an issue we concern ourselves with deeply. The conclusion of the conference came quickly, but the ideas shared and connections made will be lasting.
